Java or Kotlin? This question arises today almost every team that plans a new backend application. Both languages run on the proven JVM, both are mature – and yet they differ noticeably in everyday life. We classify what really counts for medium-sized projects.

Java: the proven standard

Java has been the backbone of countless business applications for over two decades. The language is stable, widely documented and boasts a vast ecosystem of libraries and experienced developers. For long-lasting systems where maintainability and availability of know-how are critical, Java remains a very secure choice.

Kotlin: modern, compact, compatible

Kotlin is designed to retain the strengths of Java and smooth its weaknesses. The code is much more compact, zero-secure and reduces typical sources of error. Since Kotlin is 100% interoperable with Java, it can be introduced step by step into existing Java projects – a great advantage for modernizations.

What counts for SMEs

  • Existing systems: Those who already use Java can specifically supplement Kotlin for new modules – without breaking.
  • Team & Maintenance: Java expertise is more widely available; Kotlin increases productivity and readability.
  • Future security: Both languages are actively developed and fully supported by Spring.

In practice, it is rarely an either-or: many modern backends combine both. Decisive is not language alone, but a clean architecture behind it.
