Why Reporting Often Sticks

Distributed data, manual Excel reporting and outdated figures lead to decisions from the gut instead of on the basis of reliable facts.

  • Data is distributed in silos – not a uniform picture.
  • Reporting via Excel is error-prone and time-consuming.
  • Key figures are obsolete as soon as they are ready.
  • Nobody trusts the numbers – decisions from the stomach.

What an ETL line has to do

An ETL route fetches data from the source systems, puts it in a common form and loads it where it is evaluated. Whether it is suitable, decides on three properties – and none of them is the loading speed.

Reliability

The track runs, and if it does not run, it reports it itself. The most common condition in grown environments is the reverse: A job breaks off at night, and it only becomes noticeable when someone wonders about an empty column in the report. We incorporate monitoring on runtimes, demolitions and volume scaffolding from the outset.

Traceability

The question “why is this number here?” must be answered without restarting the job. This is achieved if raw data is preserved unchanged and each transformation is based on it as a separate, versioned and testable step. This is the difference between a track that you can maintain and one that no one will ever touch.

Changeability

Key figures change because business models change. A good range allows a definition to be adjusted without anyone being afraid of the side effects. Where changes are instead built alongside it, two truths emerge over time – and the more expensive one is the one nobody knows about.

Take over or replace existing routes

Not every project starts on the green field. Frequently, routes already exist in SSIS, Talend, as a stack of grown SQL scripts or in a self-built job control system. We take over such environments and decide together with you what remains and what is replaced – according to benefits, not age. A route that has been running faultlessly for eight years and whose logic is documented is not a renovation case.

Where a replacement makes sense, it never runs by deadline, but in parallel operation: The new track works alongside the old one for a while, both results are compared automatically, and any deviation is clarified before someone switches their reports. Experience has shown that these deviations are the real benefit of the conversion – they reveal where the calculation has been wrong for years. How to tell that a track is at the end, we have in the article ETL lines no longer touched summarised.

Frequent questions about BI & ETL

ETL stands for Extract, Transform, Load. An ETL route is the automated way in which data from the source systems is fetched, unified and loaded into the evaluation layer – regularly, without manual intervention and in comprehensible steps. Modern superstructures often turn the order (ELT): first load, then transform in the target system. The advantage is less speed than traceability, because the raw data is preserved.
Yes. We take over grown environments in SSIS, Talend, dbt or as an SQL script collection, document the technical logic and decide with you what remains. Where it is replaced, this is done in parallel operation with automated comparison against the stock – not by change of date.
The focus is on Microsoft Power BI, supplemented by Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, Databricks, Snowflake, Talend and dbt; where appropriate, other tools. Which license form fits and when the step to Fabric is worthwhile, leads our page to the Power BI and Fabric Consulting off. However, the tool question is rarely the decisive one – the quality of a dashboard determines the database behind it, not the frontend.
Not always. For consistent, performant key figures across several sources, it is usually worthwhile, because otherwise each evaluation brings its own logic and numbers diverge. For a single, clean source, direct access can suffice. We evaluate this based on your sources and requirements, not by scheme.
The range is large because three factors are decisive: the number of source systems to be connected, the status of the data in them and the question of how many key figures really have to be coordinated. The most expensive item is rarely the technique, but the technical agreement on what a key figure means. We therefore prefer to start with a tightly cut proof of concept, which makes reliable figures from estimates.
Depending on the requirements up to almost real time. The routes load automatically at suitable intervals – nightly, hourly or event-driven. Higher timeliness is technically feasible, but costs operation and complexity; It only makes sense where decisions are actually made under the day.
Yes. With self-service BI, departments create their own evaluations on a secure, approved database. The separation is important: centrally defined and coordinated key figures on the one hand, free analysis on the other. Without this separation, exactly the contradictory numbers arise, which self-service should actually avoid.
